Intel Screen Tearing Fix

Tue Oct 24, 2017 5:45 am

For anyone with screen tearing issues using Intel onboard graphics...

1) From the software center, Install xorg-driver-video-intel

2) Create a file called 20-intel.conf , then copy & paste the following in it...

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

3) Save

4) Open your file manager as root and navigate to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

*By locating it here (rather than /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/), you assure continuation through any software updates)

5) Paste 20-intel.conf to that folder

6) Exit your file manager and reboot.

Note: Users of Firefox should also make sure to uncheck 'smooth scrolling' in FF Prefs/General.

I would just recommend opening the text editor as root instead of the whole file manager, just for safety. :)

blueeyesdevil,

Uncheck 'smooth scrolling' in Firefox's Prefs/General. Thanks for the heads up...updated the tutorial to include it. ;)

Code: Select all

sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
the terminal willl say new file
just copy and paste the settings listed above press ctrl+x then press y to confirm changes then hit enter and there you go

Note that editing configuration files in /usr will be overwritten every time the package that owns it is updated.

sunnyflunck,

Is there a better way that will survive those updates?

Yeah best way is to move the config to /etc or create a new config in there. Solus aim to be stateless. This is why configurations need to go in /etc.

As simple as that...just drop the file anywhere in /etc?
