[Solved] vmware player cannot run again

Mon Dec 11, 2017 6:12 pm

Hi Guys,

Normally after a kernel update I would run sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all and it would install and everything would be fine. Howver now after I run it, I keep getting errors say it cannot run vmmon.

I have tried the solutions listed here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VMware

Can anyone offer advice please?

Well the archwiki page only goes up to kernel 4.13 and Solus has just switched linux-current kernel to 4.14.

If you feel comfortable with patching yourself, you may have a look at this repository, otherwise, you may want to switch to the linux-lts kernel which is a version 4.9.

Thanks, I downloaded the git and ran the make file and then realized I have no idea how to implement the patch at all - lol

Howdy all,

So I managed to get this working after many many unsuccessful tries. Turns out it was pretty easy enough to do. So I will try and explain it as best I can.

Download this github repo:

https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host ... yer-12.5.7. This is for the version of vware-player I have, change the branch to the version applicable to you.

Extract the vmmon-only folder to your home folder open terminal and navigate to inside that folder and run

Code: Select all

sudo make
.

Once that has been successful, compress the folder, and rename the vmmon-only.tar.xz to vmmon.tar

Then copy that tar file to /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source. I used this command:

Code: Select all

sudo cp vmmon.tar /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source
Once that had copied I ran vmware-player, it asked to install the module, which it did successfully for the first time.

I do hope this helps someone

Thanks for posting this selwynorren,
I tried it, would not compile for me. I have to use the 4.9lts to be able to use vmware player 14

I downloaded player-14.0.0 (i have vmware player 14 installed) https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host ... yer-14.0.0
I had kernel 4.14 booted

When I do 'sudo make' in the vmmon directory that i downloaded & unzipped it spits out an error.

I tested the 'sudo make' while booted into the 4.9.68lts kernel and it completed without error

I will post the error next time I boot up 4.14 kernel

Thanks for your reply ;)

yeah I seem to be having teh same issue as you. It refuses to build.

I am now installing the LTS kernel myself. I hate to admit it but I need the windows system for one piece of software that i wish I could do without
