(GUI) removal of partition/hd encryption

Fri Sep 15, 2017 2:51 pm

Hi,

whilst partition encryption is offered via GUI during installation I could not find such GUI for encryption removal, except this bit related to encryption in the gnome-disk-utility 3.24.1

Also the GNOME Partition Editor does not appear to offer any tools related to the partition/disk encryption.

How to remove/instate encryption of partitions/hd from within Solus?

Thanks for the input. The above screenshot is from disks but I fail to see any option to remove the decryption.

and the encryption options are displayed in the initial screenshot, which does not seem to feature encryption removal

You cannot just remove encryption. Here is the 3 steps to do it:
  • backup
  • reformat
  • restore

thanks for the feedback!

Is this a Solus specific restriction or a generic linux issue? Commonly I would have thought that if it can be implemented with a click I can be reversed as well with a click or two, and not jumping through the listed hoops.

Did not find anything in the https://solus-project.com/help-center/home/

It's a generic issue (just google something like remove encryption).

I saw on the cryptsetup man page there is a --decrypt option but it looks quite dangerous (in all cases you have to backup your data):
--decrypt Remove encryption (decrypt already encrypted device and remove LUKS header).
WARNING: This is destructive operation and cannot be reverted.
