HOW TO: install Plymouth boot theme for Solus.

Thu Mar 17, 2016 5:18 pm

With some assistance from Mr. Ikey.. :lol:
I got Plymouth installed on Solus.

For those not familiar with Plymouth, its a boot splash -- https://wiki.debian.org/plymouth

Installation on Solus is a tad different than on Debian/Ubuntu or Arch.

Basically the steps are:
  • 1. Install plymouth (it also installs themes)

    Code: Select all

    sudo eopkg it plymouth
    2. List themes installed

    Code: Select all

     /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme --list
    atom2
    azenis
    details
    fade-in
    glow
    script
    solar
    spinfinity
    spinner
    text
    tribar
    3. Set theme (solar seems fitting for Solus)

    Code: Select all

    sudo  /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme solar

    4. Edit your kernel parameter
    To have 'quiet splash' in your kernel parameters.

    Code: Select all

    sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

    example(in green) for St 'Patty's Day.. :P
    # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
    # /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

    GRUB_DEFAULT="1"
    GRUB_TIMEOUT="4"
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Solus`"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
    5. Now update Solus kernel initrams (Thanks to Ikey for this info)..

    Code: Select all

    sudo dracut -f
    6. And update grub

    Code: Select all

    sudo update-grub
----------------------

If all went well you should re-boot to a nice Solus tweaked 'solar' theme..

Which is basically this (not actutal -- my hack)

Awkward screenshot is awkward XD

Nice work!! I imagine there's plenty for us to do on Plymouth yet, and update it for HiDPI support too

Yep...sorry.. :P
Got rid of the 'D****' logo and fudged solusproject in there.
Folks, actually it looks much better in real life.. That is just my rendition to show approx. what it will look like.. I can't get a screenshot during boot.. :?

You can preview your splash by using:

Code: Select all

sudo plymouthd; sudo plymouth --show-splash ; for ((I=0; I<5; I++)); do plymouth --update=test$I ; sleep 1; done; sudo plymouth quit

I followed step by step, no errors, even --show-splash worked, but there's no Plymouth starting the OS at all. :(

When this was originally tested, the splash screen didn't always appear immediately and it was booted before it would load. As it added to boot time it was never added to Solus or changed to make sure it showed all the time.

I've got the same error. Any suggestions?
