New to Solus and some questions before installation

Sun Dec 17, 2017 2:22 pm

Hello! I am new to Solus (actually to the Linux idea). I am considering changing from Windows 10 to Solus because I am having an unsolved problem with latency on my brand new notebook. High DPC latency, ndis.sys to blame (according to LatencyMon) and I tried everything internet offered as solution but nothing worked. The symptons are mouse and software micro-freeze and stuttering.

So I was thinking if changing to Linux could solve the problem. Actually I always wanted to change to Linux but because I play some AAA games that wasn't an option. But now I am reading that gaming on Linux has improved and that I could play some games like Fallout 4 and Witcher 3.

So here are my initial questions:

1) This is the most important thing: Could I solve high DPC issues using Linux? Since this is a driver problem ( I don't think it is hardware) , does Linux drivers could solve this issue?

2) How exactly could I play those mentioned games on Solus? I know that it uses WINE and Steam app to run them but how can I make it work?

3) What about the options of having Solus on one HD and Windows on another for the time I want to play games that doesn't have good performance on Linux? Or is it better to dual boot? I am reading that W10 updates sometimes break dual boot.

4) How is the support to Lenovo Nerve Center? I use this to speed up my fans on heavy gaming, start keyboard light, etc. Or if there is an alternative to this.

5) I have a GTX 1060 GPU, does it work well on Solus?

Hello mrossi, welcome to solus.

1. If I was you, since that latency is a major issue for you, would be for me too.
You could write the Solus iso to a usb, it comes with a live environment, meaning you can test solus without installing it. No need to install and you can test out whether the latency is an issue with solus.

Here some info for downloading & writing the iso to a usb to get you started: https://solus-project.com/articles/inst ... nstall/en/

2. Its just a case of installing some software from the software center (if you get past your number 1 issue we are here to help you)

3. That's what I do, I have separate hard drives for different OSes (less issues)

4. Not sure about Lenovo, but doing number one should answer some of them questions

5. GTX 1060 should work without issues, nvidia is well supported in linux

Hope this helps, let us know if you have any problems getting the live usb going ;)

Ok, I started testing Solus from the USB, but I can't enable wifi. I am trying to click on the icon on the lower right side of the screen but I can't connect. It says both Ethernet and Wifi are disabled. What should I do?

How is the latency?
You can use 'Hardware Drivers' from the menu to check for drivers. There are other ways if non found.

if no drivers found, type in a terminal & Post the output of:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fx

Thanks
