Solus Plymouth Theme

Thu Apr 14, 2016 5:04 pm

Hey everyone,

So out of boredom I tried to create a Plymouth theme.

I'm not sure but I know that Nvidia Proprietary driver doesn't like Plymouth much.
No idea about AMD Radeon.

Most of it is taken from the Flat Splash theme created by Fabián Alexis.

You can download it on GitHub.

I'm open to any commits and improvements.

Quick install instructions:

Installing Plymouth:

Code: Select all

sudo eopkg it plymouth
Then you'll need to place the "solus" folder into "/usr/share/plymouth/themes"

Open up the console and type this:

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme solus -R
You can reboot to see the changes.

Have a nice day ! :)

Code: Select all

sudo eopkg it plymouth git
cd /tmp
git clone https://github.com/eti1337/solus-plymouth.git
cd solus-plymouth
sudo mv Solus /usr/share/plymouth/themes/solus
sudo plymouth-set-default-theme solus -R
Had to make Solus into solus as it likes all lowercase in plymouth as it looks for lowercase solus :) Rebooting to test now.

I just got a black screen on my testing laptop and my desktop when booting with it. It booted normally afterwards but the plymouth splash didn't show, might have to check my boot settings.

This is a plymouth under Solus issue. According to ikey, we still need to fix up LightDM so it waits for plymouth to quit and make plymouth stop tty1 so we don't see "that in-between login". As it stands, sometimes plymouth shows up, sometimes not. Sometimes it hangs and lightdm doesn't show, sometimes not. Black magic :D

Fixed the folder name, thanks.

Thought the "nvidia-glx-driver" broke my lightdm service, I was only able to access tty console.
I had to go back to "nouveau" to make things work.

I think that Plymouth only works with the Nouveau driver, but I'm not sure.

Had the same issue with GDM.

Also like Justin had to rename Solus folder to solus (lower case) still no theme.

Code: Select all

gene@solus ~ $ sudo /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme solus -R
Password:
/usr/share/plymouth/themes/solus/solus.plymouth does not exist
(after rename)

Code: Select all

gene@solus ~ $ sudo /usr/sbin/plymouth-set-default-theme solus -R
Executing: /usr/bin/dracut -f
dracut module 'bootchart' will not be installed, because command '/sbin/bootchartd' could not be found!
dracut module 'modsign' will not be installed, because command 'keyctl' could not be found!
[....]
Other Plymouth themes work fine.
Nouveau driver.

@GeneC

Works fine on my side.

I'm not getting these errors thought.
I just reinstalled the theme from the git repo to see if I got these errors and had no issues.
Check if solus.plymouth is in the directory "solus", I might have caused a problem while updating the repo (I was moving and deleting files sometimes).

Otherwise it should work.

Hi

Thanks for your efforts.. That first error was with the old package with the "Capitol S". Downloaded the new one (see solus-orage is also new).. :)

Code: Select all

gene@solus ~ $ sudo plymouth-set-default-theme --list
Password:
atom2
azenis
details
fade-in
glow
script
solar
solus-orange
solus
spinfinity
spinner
text
tribar
But neither new theme work for me. All others in the list do work. Perhaps is because I use GDM (gnome-shell requires it). Might be related to the lightdm issue that Josh mentioned..

I know, i know, necro bumping is bad or whatever, but on the off chance anyone wants to use the theme, just edit the solus.plymouth file and change 'Solus' to 'solus' then it will work like a charm

Not a bad looking theme mate ;)
