Budgie 11 switches to Qt

Wed Jan 25, 2017 7:44 am

Ikey talks about it here:
https://budgie-desktop.org/2017/01/25/k ... budgie-11/
Very informative, and following his thoughts it makes fully sense.

Wondering if there could be some collaboration with the Lumina Desktop from TrueOS (BSD).
They use Qt without any KDE libs already...

Any thoughts?

Why not just merge with LXQT?

Because we don't want LXQT? We don't share any goals? They're totally separate projects? etc

I wish all distro teams were as thorough and transparent as the Solus team. :D

The way that you have approached this fundamental change inspires confidence and firms up my belief that choosing Solus as my distro of choice is the correct move. I may not be fond of the latest two decisions from the Solus project (Flatpak integration and moving Budgie to Qt), but it is obvious how much forethought and consideration has gone into making these decisions. All this to say, I applaud Ikey for being willing to make such a massive move with the Budgie code base.

I can't wait to see how these changes pan out and look forward to the day Optimus support lands (good gaming experince FTW!).

Just finished watching the Unity 8 video on youtube: Ubuntu 17.04 Unity 8 - current state

At the very end of the video there is a window sliding in from the right like Raven

Somehow it's strange to see that the "newer" influential Desktop Environments right now use Qt and have a Desktop Child Window sliding in from the side:
First was the Deepin Desktop Environment, then Budgie, and now Unity 8.

It's just a bummer that all 3 seem to "find" a similar path but everyone does their own thing.

Oh well...

BTW: not talking about the underlying OS. We all know nothing beats Solus

Read the article a while back with much of interest. It's great to see such transparency and announcing things in advance.
I'm happy to see flatpak support.
As for Qt - heck, if you can make (and I believe you can :) ) it as smooth and nice as current gtk implementation I'm all in. Even though I'm a tad worried as I think it will require new file manager, color calibration, wacom settings and other apps - so that all mounts to a lot of work.

Any news on Budgie 11? I keep visiting Budgie-desktop.org but there are no updates over there. Has development started yet. I'm really excited to see what Budgie 11 becomes. With the recent news of Ubuntu discontinuing Unity, I expect that Ubuntu-Budgie is going to be a very popular desktop. That of course will likely bring a lot of interest back to Solus as well.
