BUG: After longer time of not running PC it fails to load login screen

Tue Feb 13, 2018 1:07 pm

I'm not sure if I'm writing this issue in the correct section so I'd like to ask someone to replace it if it needs to be anywhere else :)

There is this strange bug that happens every morning when I turn the PC on. It loads the system but fails to show the login screen, it only happens once and after the reboot it starts working correctly as it should. It seems that the bug occurs every time the computer has not been running for a longer period of time for example overnight.
Hardware:
MSI MS-7528 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Nvidia 9500GT (Nouveau driver)
4GB DDR2 (800MHz) RAM
HDD: WD Black 320GB (7200rpm)

Software:
Solus 3, Budgie (updated to latest)
Kernel 4.14.15-48 (current) x86_64

Solus is the first distribution that has the mentioned problem, so I'd gladly help in solving it, let me know if there are any logs that I can send to the development team so they can look into the issue. I wrote some basic hardware info above.

NOTE: If anyone has a potential fix, I'd be grateful since I love Solus OS and wouldn't want to revert back to Ubuntu!

There is a range of issues that could be causing this issue, if you can get to a virtual terminal ( [Ctrl]+[Alt]+F1 ) then check for clues in the boot logs, see https://solus-project.com/articles/trou ... -boot-time for details.

Could be hung waiting for unavailable resource, NTP clock sync failure (BIOS battery?) ....

If you want to watch the logs as you boot, edit the Grub menu entry you boot from > hit 'e' to edit then remove the "quiet" and "splash" from the kernel boot line and edit the entry

Code: Select all

systemd.show_status=false
to read "true" (no quotation mark in the actual code) then you should see the logs as boot progresses. Can be helpful to see where you are sticking at if you cannot boot to any sort of prompt at all..

Apparently it does load the login screen but it freezes after something like 2 minutes and when I return back I need to resetart due to a freeze. I don't know how to solve this issue... Kernel loads normaly, I can access CTRL + ALT + F1

It seems to be connected with login manager itself, but the strange thing is that it happens on all gdm, lightdm and sddm. Maybe it's just some Solus configuration that doesn't play nicely with my hardware.

Your mobo appears to have an onboard Intel GPU so that could be causing issues, try booting with the param 'nomodeset' to see if that improves things:

https://solus-project.com/articles/trou ... solus-boot

The freeze sessions sounds like X session problem, although without seeing any logs, this is just conjecture, so again likely related to graphics driver issues, so take a look at this pages on Nvidia driver issues:

https://solus-project.com/articles/trou ... on-t-start

to see if any of this helps.

Another thing to check on older systems is that you aren't out of ram and swap partition is not active so check you are set up right with that (from a terminal cli):

Code: Select all

cat /proc/swaps
or

Code: Select all

swapon --show

I will try to provide you with some logs in following days. The funny thing is that it ONLY happens when PC hasn't been running for like 12+ hours... And that otherwise everything works fine including nouveau driver. Also this problem has only happened to me on Solus, all other distros always performed fine with nouveau drivers.

Here is the output that I get from some of the mentioned terminal commands:

Any Idea what could be going on?

Two things I see that can cause issue:

First you have no swap space, or more likely you do but something has happened to it since install, and as you have only 4 Gig ram, you really need to sort that out to prevent any freezes due to using up your ram (believe me I know, this old laptop I'm on only has 2Gig!!) so check this page to investigate whether a certain other system I see present on you system has been messing with your Solus partitions.

The other thing is that you have an Nvidia GPU so could be the Nouveau doesn't play well with your card, but you'll have to search around to see what experience others with the same 9500GT have had to get a better picture. Try the proprietary Nvidia drivers maybe?

The problem is that on same setup with KDE Neon 4GB of RAM and Nouveau everything works great... I guess I'll have to revert this PC to Ubuntu, very unlucky case. Also note that the issue only happens after PC has not been running for longer time, so it has to be something Solus related.
