[SOLVED] hplip on HP printer

Sun Dec 17, 2017 1:54 pm

I usually set up my HP printer using the automated hplip (3.17.11) walkthrough:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... tall/index

Solus 3 MATE is not listed in various distros and I get this message:
“warning: solus distro is not found in AUTH_TYPES”.

For AUTH_TYPE can I select Mint, Debian or another Linux distro, so that the various dependencies are installed on my Solus system?

Please advise.

Many thanks.

You want to get hplip from the Solus repositories. Either look it up in the software center or use:

Code: Select all

sudo eopkg it hplip

KerflufflyKitty,

Thanks for your reply.

My all in one printer is an HP 8620, so I need the scan and copy functions as well.

I have installed hplip via Solus SC.

I am looking at:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... l/download

I am happy with that part.

The next bit confuses me:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... /configure

I have not used configure previously, so please be patient with me.

Do I use static or dynamic PPD?

What commands do I use etc?

Which of the packages in Step 2 do I need?

I can probably deal with the subsequent "make" command and what follows subsequently.

I am confused with the manual installation of hplip and unfortunately, unless I can crack this, it will mean reinstalling Linux Mint just to deal with the printer installation.

I am very pleased with the rolling release that is Solus 3 MATE and I do not really want to abandon it.

If you can just get me over the PPD and "configure" hurdles, I think I will be okay.

I need a "walkthrough for idiots"!

Thanks for your patience.

Sorry, I'm not very familiar with hplip, so I may be asking really stupid questions here. Please bear with me. So, you installed hplip from the SC but it failed to let you scan and copy? The reason I'm asking is, you shouldn't need to compile hplip from source when you can get it from the SC. You shouldn't need to perform the step you're trying right now.

Are you following some guide where this is part of the steps? Can you link to it in that case?

Edit: I just realized you did link me to the guide and the next steps are at the bottom of each page. You should probably start here after installing hplip from the SC. Ignore the CUPS and YaST instructions, they are probably not necessary.

KerflufflyKitty,

The 2 links above refer to the guide I am using.

Thanks.

Yes, I just edited my original post when I realized that you actually did link to the guide.

This is what I added in it:

KK,

It is just the configure stage where I am stuck.

I am in the Terminal and I am ready to use:

./configure [OPTION] [VAR=VALUE]

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... /configure

What in PPD etc do I use or do I ignore this?

I have to use configure on something but what?

Dynamic, Static, foomatic??

What do I use for Solus and my HP 8620?

Oops, my link didn't work in the quote. You can actually skip that step entirely, as well as the next few until you get to this one:

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... l/hp_setup

The ones before that have already been done before hplip was put in the SC. So start there, at the part where it says

Code: Select all

su
hp-setup

Hope that helps! :)

KerflufflyKitty,

I owe you a large beer!

I never realised that configure and make were superfluous in my case.

Code: Select all

sudo hp-setup
and choosing USB solved my problem.

Very many thanks.
