Graphics Drivers etc.

Wed Mar 15, 2017 8:29 pm

Hi all, first off I'd like to say this is an amazing OS, great job to the team of people who created/are creating this. I'm having a few issues with graphics drivers however. I read on the forum that there is now optimus support, and tried following ikey's instructions from the announcement thread. The issues I'm having are the following. First, whenever i do a full update of the system out of the box it makes it so on the next boot it loads to a single
white underscore looking cursor in the top left corner of my screen. I tried hitting ctrl+alt+f1 to open the shell and play with it but it brings nothing up and no matter what im stuck at that screen. Second, if I don't update any NVIDIA drivers and don't update xorg then all is well except for the fact i get random freezes, especially when opening/closing windows. The freezes make it so the mouse wont move and it looks like the desktop completely reloads
itself if that makes any sense. I have done like 10 plus fresh installs because nothing will fix the nvidia problem except that. I could be doing this all wrong idk, some help would be greatly appreciated. My specs are: OS: Solus "shannon" 2017.01.01.0 • CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz (800MHz) • Memory: Physical: 14.8 GiB Total (14.3 GiB Free) Swap: 3.6 GiB Total (3.6 GiB Free) • Storage: 52.2 GB / 998.8 GB (946.6 GB Free) • VGA: 8086:191b @ 8086:1910 • Uptime: 21m 45s

I'm not quite sure to be honest. I know nvidia doesn't usually play nice with linux at least as far as optimus/mobile cards usually go. I've faced much worse issues with ubuntu and elementary OS. I guess I'll stick with this i don't particularly need my graphics card for anything I mostly use my laptop for writing code (I'm a computer science student at a university). I decided to ditch windows 10 cause forced updates are utter bullshit. My only thing now is does anyone know if I can make it so solus doesn't see my nvidia card at all because i think thats whats causing my freezes even though i'm using the intel graphics. Thanks again for any help its greatly appreciated!!

Not sure if this would help but here is the output from inxi -G

Code: Select all

Graphics: Card-1: Intel Device 191b
           Card-2: NVIDIA Device 139b
           Display Server: X.Org 1.18.4 drivers: nouveau,intel (unloaded: fbdev,vesa)
           Resolution: 1920x1080@60.02hz
GLX Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)
           GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 13.0.2

You could try removing the nouveau xorg driver. 'xorg-driver-video-nouveau'

I'm not sure what impact that will have, as it doesn't disable the nvidia and may revert to using modesetting instead (which may/may not work better)
