GitHub being acquired by Microsoft ... ?

Mon Jun 04, 2018 12:46 am

Dear fellows,
rumors are roaming around in regard to Microsoft having serious talks with the GitHub company.
This has been going on for years, and despite being a more of a "fear" / wish back in the days, it seems that now there is a concrete possibility that the estimated 5 billion dollars acquisition can happen. For some, this can be even announced tomorrow!

My main concern is that by buying a centralized service that stores the majority of open source project codes, it will be possible (even way too easy) to read, generate stats and basically running an underground research lab that uses as the primary source a material invented exactly for escaping from such companies. :o Am I the only one thinking that money are actually oiling the nice and joyful garden of the open source world? :(
I have read of many FOSS developers fearing for what good can become from such a news, which led many to consider a transition to GitLab.

I wonder: how do the Solus Project team prepare for this event? ; if something will necessarily change or the "wait-and-see" approach can be used to probe the real consequences of the acquisition.

I will link a source in case someone wants to read about it:

They're talking about it all over the web.

Smells bad.

Github has never been open source and it didn't prevent it to be successful. Having a different owner shouldn't make a big difference.

There are many alternatives, gitlab being the most popular, so why all this noise? :ugeek:

Always thought GitHub as a kind of opensource fortress, free of money making corporate manipulations.
Handing itself over to Microsoft would be to surrender to the dark side and lose this independence.
Giving in to Microsoft represents a system that will likely impose new laws that will stifle free spirit and creativity.

But, if there are always other good venues to run to, then...
"Don't worry, be happy!" :)
